PROBUS is a world-wide organization of retired and semi-retired people who join together to keep their minds active, expand their interests and meet new friends.
Today there are approximately 300,000 members in over 4,000 clubs across more than 20 countries. PROBUS is somewhat of a phenomenon as the growth is explosive and new clubs are being sponsored every year.
As of April 2018 there are 244 active clubs with over 36,500 members in Canada.
The PROBUS Club of Ajax was the first in Durham (there are now 8 Durham Clubs) and we recently celebrated our 20th anniversary.
We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Ajax Community Centre (75 Centennial Rd, Ajax), in the HMS Ajax Community Hall. We have just over 200 members and our average meeting attendance is around 110-120.
Meetings start at 10:00 a.m. and are
usually finished just before noon.
We start with a short business
meeting and announcements,
break for coffee and to socialize,
then reconvene to enjoy a
guest speaker. Guest speakers
have entertained us on a wide
variety of topics and have included
authors, lawyers, tax specialists,
and experts in various fields of interest.
Membership fees in the PROBUS Club of Ajax are $20 annually with a one-time registration fee of $20. There is a $2.00 per meeting fee. PROBUS name badges for meetings and functions are supplied by the Club. A small annual contribution per member, included in the membership fee, helps to fund the operations of PROBUS Canada.
Our social committee is always busy organizing a variety of activities including a summer BBQ and Christmas luncheon, day trips such as theatre outings, river cruises and wine tastings, as well as trips that are 3-5 days long to places like Cape Cod, Ottawa and Quebec.
The PROBUS Club of Ajax has a number of small groups coordinated by volunteers that cater to various interests such as walking, family history, card games, golf, lunching out, and a book club and more.
